A number of prospective vessels were considered during a search to identify the proper blend of capabilities, accommodations and costs appropriate for the project.
Two vessels have been selected; they are the M/V Rachel Marie and the M/V Melissa Ann. These vessels are certified by the U.S. Coast Guards to carry passengers and have been successfully operated as passenger ferries in the past. They can easily accommodate 149 passengers on two decks and provide limited outside seating on the upper deck. The upper and lower passenger cabins are air conditioned. Bathrooms and a service counter are situated on the main deck.
Propulsion is provided by efficient diesel engines driving conventional shafts and propellers through reduction gears.
Both vessels can operate at 25 knots.
